![]() There is no establishment of a long-term goal except the implied "save people from the end of the world" despite the fact that you're initially just playing as tax collectors and peasants.Ī sad story focused on suffering _is neither clever nor art,_ in the same way that a happy story focused on people just enjoying a nice time is not clever nor art. The alternating turns just nullifies any complexity possible with an action economy - if you bring more units, the enemy will just get to attack more frequently.įrom an operations level, there is never any goal except "make it to the next place" and then "the next place" is just ruins held by another despot drunk on madness. The characters don't get new abilities, they just get more numbers that are kept in pace by enemies' numbers so that at the end of the game you're still just chipping away. Gameplay-wise, the combat is simply uninspired. If I wanted to experience that, I'd move to Russia. There is never any reprieve from the depression and slaughter, everyone is suspended in an eternal limbo of exhaustion and starvation. People have no motivations beyond cruelty's sake, nothing ever pays off, and it's a coin flip whether caution or recklessness will be less punishing. For a game that's said to have an incredible story, it's just a series of moments where your choices don't matter and things just get worse. ![]() I don't write reviews often, but this game is exceptional. Tl dr I deeply regret being convinced to buy this series on the premise of it having an incredible story.
